Fairview Health Services Anesthesia Technician in Edina, Minnesota


To operate as part of the anesthesia team by assisting the Anesthesiologist and the CRNA in the administration and maintenance of general and regional anesthesia, by maintaining, calibrating, preparing/set up and troubleshooting various equipment needs, and by stocking and maintaining par levels of all anesthesia supplies. Provides services for surgical procedures and autotransfusion which may include but is not limited to performance of duties and responsibilities as listed below. The anesthesia technician works under the day-to-day direction of the Anesthesiologist, CRNA and/or Charge CRNA.

This is a full-time, day shift position. Shift times would be Monday-Friday, 6am-2pm or 9am-5pm. Shift length can be determined by scheduler. Weekends would be on-call.

This position will cover both Southdale and UMMC East and West Bank Hospitals.


Job Expectations:

Has responsibility for, but not limited to one of more of the following Clinical Duties:

  • Facilitates OR room setup/turnover for anesthesia by assisting with technical anesthesia specific equipment.

  • Properly cares for anesthesia equipment and is responsible for preventive maintenance of anesthesia equipment by working with Biomed and outside vendors.

  • Consult daily Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures and assist in preparing off site locations for indicated procedures.

  • Maintain and stock fiberoptic carts, epidural carts, spinal carts, emergency airways bags, and other anesthesia items.

  • Obtain blood products and pharmaceuticals as requested by the Anesthesia team.

  • Assists Anesthesiologist and nursing staff with hemodynamic monitoring during placement of central lines, maintenance of lines in PACU/ICU and assists in transporting patients with invasive lines to and from OR.

  • Assists Anesthesiologists with invasive line placement, non-invasive monitoring devices and equipment set up.

  • Assists Anesthesiologists with regional nerve blocks

  • Set up and case management for Autologous Blood Processing – Cell Saver.

  • TEE initial cleaning and safe transport, send out TEE via work order request for repair, maintain and store TEE properly, knowledge of infection control principles/policies/procedures.

  • Fiberoptic bronchoscope initial cleaning and safe transport, send out FOB via work order request for repair, maintain and store FOB properly, knowledge of infection control principles/policies/procedures.

  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump monitoring and transport.

  • Impella Device maintenance, monitoring and transport.

  • Operation of Point of Care Testing devices (POCT).

  • Transportation support within and between hospitals (ECMO, Impella).

  • Other clinical services as assigned.

  • Maintains peripheral nerve block carts.

  • Assist anesthesia team in patient positioning.

  • Documentation of procedures and processes that they assist in for compliance and tracking.

  • May act as a role model for orientation and training of anesthesia technicians.

  • May assume anesthesia technician charge role in managing daily work schedule of anesthesia technicians and directing care to provide safe and efficient environment.

  • Reads, understands, and implements all policies and procedure guidelines.

  • Collects and reports quality improvement data as requested.

  • Notifies appropriate person(s)/department(s) when problems develop with equipment.

  • Cleans all technical equipment used at end of each case/procedure, prepares equipment for next case/procedure.

  • Ensures supplies are stocked and available as needed.

  • Performs other duties and works on projects as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications to Fulfill Job Responsibilities:



  • 2 years of college coursework in biology, physiology, anatomy, or related scientific fields.


  • 1 year of direct patient contact experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse or related clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.


  • Basic Life Support Provider Certification



  • Previous related medical experience, operating room experience or completion of related medical/science college level courses, certificate, or degree preferred.


  • Previous healthcare or operating room experience or medical training preferred.

  • Candidates who are interested in pursuing an advanced medical career; or candidates who are in school or planning to attend school for health care, medical, or science degree or certification; or candidates interested in pursuing a hospital related bachelor’s degree is preferred.
