Fairview Health Services Anatomic Pathology Technician in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Overview

Fairview Health Services is looking for an Anatomic Pathology Technician for the Acute Care Laboratory at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, West Bank. This is a full-time position, with 8 hour shifts on rotating Day/Evening, including every other weekend.

The Acute Care Laboratory is an engaging work environment focused on patient safety and experience. The patient population is diverse and includes pediatric specialties (both inpatient and outpatient), behavioral health, rehab, and medical surgical patients. The duties include specimen receiving, processing (centrifugation and aliquoting of patient samples), managing sample accountability, answering nursing and provider questions, coordinating specimen drops and patient collections, etc.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Anatomic Pathology Technician (APT) performs all work processes necessary for the preparation or procurement of specimens used for high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88. The APT possesses knowledge of the clinical laboratories, performs routine and specialty processes, recognizes problems, identifies basic causes, and makes corrections using established protocols. The APT analyzes data based on knowledge of technical and instrumental conditions affecting diagnostic test results and performs procedures within established parameters. The APT collaborates with the customers of the laboratory to assure an exceptional customer experience. The APT works independently under general supervision.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood specimens.

  • Processes specimens including test set-up.

  • Assesses integrity of all specimens for testing/processing.

  • Verifies correct identification of specimens (blood, fluid, tissue) during collection and processing.

  • Follows established guidelines for determining priority of specimen testing, processing, and procurement.

  • Understands the organizational structure of clinics in relation to the different hospital sites.

  • Communicates, in a professional manner, different collection instructions to providers collecting specimens.

  • Follows and promotes Safety Always Reliability Behaviors to Prevent Errors

Follows established guidelines and procedures to accession/order enter specimens/tests into the computer system:

  • Enters correct information required by the LIS computer system.

  • Verifies patient identification, demographics, ordering physician and tests ordered

  • Verifies billing

  • Errors in data entry minimal

Performs all work processes necessary for the production of specimens used for high complexity testing as defined by CLIA'88:

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the pathology/clinical laboratory and performs routine and specialty procedures.

  • Performs specimen processing for all specimen types, including reference laboratories.

  • Operates laboratory instrumentation and information systems according to written procedures.

  • Works independently under general supervision.

  • Completes specified maintenance on instruments according to written procedures.

  • Supports ordering and maintaining adequate laboratory supply volumes.

  • Maintains a clean and organized working environment.

  • Accurately describes the appearance of the gross specimen or other specimens upon receipt

  • Accurately time/date stamp specimens upon receipt following departmental guidelines.

  • Recognizes problems and takes appropriate measures to resolve them.

  • Identifies basic causes of problems and makes corrections using established protocols

  • Initiates proper safety or emergency responses.

  • Obtains assistance from supervisor or others if unable to resolve issues.

Evaluates diagnostic preparations for quality and initiates interventions as needed.

  • Microscopically reviews slides to insure that quality diagnostic preparations are produced.

  • Identifies unacceptable quality and initiates corrective action when parameters are out of compliance

  • Takes appropriate action to recheck abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results.

  • Directly communicates abnormal and critical results to care giver.

Complies with Laboratory Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement, and Laboratory Compliance Programs.

  • Documents deviations and action taken.

  • Documents reagent, test kit and calibrator checks.

  • Recognizes and communicates values that exceed the QC decision levels.

  • Reports unresolved QC trends to supervisor.

  • Complies with laboratory procedures needed for regulatory compliance.

HemePath Bone Marrow Collection:

  • Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens (blood, bone marrow) and prioritize work.

  • Assists providers in obtaining specimens from patients during bone marrow collection.

  • Properly verifies patient identity, testing orders, and specimens.

  • Communicates lab testing needs to clinicians during procedures.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree, 24 credits college coursework with emphasis in biology & chemistry, and/or 2 years of applicable laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS degree or Medical Assistant degree

  • 1-2 year of experience in a clinical laboratory or anatomic diagnostic laboratory
