M Health Fairview is looking for a Vascular Access Technician at University of Minnesota Medical Center (East Bank) located in Minneapolis, MN.
This position will be working 64 hours per two weeks on the evening shift, 8 hour shifts, and every other weekend.

The Vascular Access Technician (VAT) is responsible for proficiently inserting, assessing, and managing vascular access devices for inpatient and outpatient areas under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role involves both clinical and administrative tasks aimed at ensuring patient satisfaction and evidence-based vascular access care.
Responsibilities Job Description
Vascular Access Management:
- Evaluates vascular access devices (VAD) for complications, promptly reporting findings to the Registered Nurses (RN) and assisting in resolving issues according to established protocols.
Collaboration and Communication:
Responds promptly to pages and phone requests, ensuring timely assistance to patient care units.
Communicates effectively with vascular access RNs, patient care units, and other departments to prioritize tasks and ensure efficient workflow.
Collaborates interdepartmentally and hospital wide with healthcare professionals to promote positive patient outcomes and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
Patient Care and Advocacy:
Proficiently assesses, places and removes peripheral intravenous access devices.
PIV placement will occur using traditional methods and technology such as ultrasound, transillumination, and near infrared technology following established protocols and guidelines.
Utilizes and initiates pain management modalities to assure comfort during all procedures.
Obtains blood specimens under the delegation of an RN.
Accurately administers medications via topical and intravenous route for placement and assessment of PIV.
Performs dressing changes on VADs using sterile or ANTT technique. Recognizes need for and initiates securement to prevent dislodgement of VAD.
Evaluates patients and coordinates with RNs to determine the most appropriate VAD based on individual needs and established protocols.
Verifies medical orders ensuring patient safety throughout the process.
Quality Assurance and Documentation:
Collects and documents data and interventions related to VAD procedures to ensure positive quality outcomes and support performance improvement initiatives.
Adheres to established guidelines for documenting all interventions, recommendations, and communications accurately.
Qualifications
Required
Experience
- 2 years placing PIV catheters or performing phlebotomy
License/Certification/Registration
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
Preferred
Experience
Ultrasound PIV placement
VAD care, maintenance, and troubleshooting
License/Certification/Registration
- Vascular Access-Board Certification VA-BC
