Fairview Health Services Registered Polysomn Tech in Princeton, Minnesota


The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist performs comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders under the general supervision of the medical director (MD, PhD, DO), or designee. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education.

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • Perform comprehensive sleep diagnostic tests.

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and center protocols.

  • Complete and verify documentation

  • Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedure to the patient

  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.

  • Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary.

  • Perform mask fit assessment and application

  • Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask de-sensitization procedure, as necessary.

  • Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), to ensure collection of appropriate data.

  • Follow “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)

  • Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary.

  • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.

  • Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).

  • Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete collection process (ie: repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of the adult and geriatric patients.

  • Oversees difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.

  • Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize abnormal wave patterns.

  • Responds to study participant’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

  • Ensure equipment safety, cleaning and sterilization

  • Polysomnographic Record Scoring

  • Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

  • Score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) with center specific protocols

  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical data

  • Perform post-test follow up

  • Deliver ongoing patient care education.

  • Responds to study participant’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

  • Service Management and Professional Issues

  • Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.

  • Assist with QA and QI data collection Maintain current CPR or BCLS certification

  • Comply with BRPT Standards of Conduct

  • Maintain a current RPSGT certification

  • Document and maintain 10 hrs of CEC sleep related activities over a 5 year period

  • Completes all initial and annual required learning relevant to the role.



Minimum Education

  • Associate degree health sciences field or actively enrolled in Polysomnography training program, with completion date within 12 months of hire date

Preferred Education

  • Bachelors degree in health sciences field, with emphasis on Polysomnography.

Minimum License/Certification/Registration

  • BCLS

  • RPSGT or must successfully complete board registry within 12 months of hire

Minimum Experience

  • One year of direct patient care experience in a Sleep Center (internship time applicable)

Preferred Experience

  • Two or more years of direct patient care experience in a Sleep Center
