The Clinical Informaticist (CI) is an expert in the use of health information technology (HIT) or data and information sciences applied to clinical care and health care business operations. This role demonstrates masterful knowledge of health system structure and operations, information and communications technologies, secondary data use and their impact on system design, clinical care, and the intersection of these different domains.
The CI uses their deep knowledge of both clinical workflows and IT systems to improve efficiencies; solve complex issues; and incorporate quality, regulatory, and other high priority organizational initiatives in partnership with operations and IT colleagues.
The CI utilizes informatics concepts, methods, and tools to promote safe and effective use of technologies by providing assistance, troubleshooting, education, and project management when called upon.
The CI applies their broad knowledge of healthcare processes to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in clinical practice and health care operations while remaining focused on the interaction of people, processes and technology for the complete and accurate delivery of information needed for efficient, high quality and safe patient care.
The CI builds and maintains relationships across operations and IT and continually assesses the usability of HIT through observations, continuous evaluation and testing.
The CI is adept in PDSA methods and change management, serving as change agents themselves. They team with informatics, IT, and operational colleagues to assess, plan, and evaluate changes to systems and can identify the impact of changes on clinical workflows.
This role helps operations in prioritization of HIT needs and adheres to defined change processes in operations and IT. The CI accurately identifies stakeholders and communicates clearly and effectively across the organization.
Intermediate Clinical Informaticist:
Resolves issues in a timely manner with minimal rework and seeks appropriate guidance when needed. Documents and shares applied solutions. Demonstrates more independence and performs in a timely manner.
Works directly with end users to understand and accurately describe issues. Under supervision helps in planning, estimating, and impact analysis of viable solution options to address business needs.
Completes work assignments in a timely manner with minimal rework and guidance. Applies solutions to achieve intended results. Defines and evaluates SMART goals based on intended results.
Independently gathers and documents simple to moderately complex business requirements and processes/workflows across operational areas. Uses Service Now as needed to document daily work and enter INC, RITM/TASK and project requests.
Anticipates the needs for and creates customer-service oriented written or verbal messages that are appropriate and understandable by target audience; delivers message in timely manner.
All Clinical Informaticists:
Covers clinical decision support, information and knowledge management, clinical documentation, provider order entry, system design, implementation, and adoption
Uses advanced interpersonal skills and relationship management to foster intraprofessional teamwork
Supports defined operational and IT processes in daily prioritization and decision making
Champions data integrity and semantic interoperability
Prepares users for and supports users during scheduled and unscheduled downtime events
Maintains systems to meet regulatory, state and federal standards
Support the progression towards the use of standard concepts and terminologies to support evidence-based practice, clinical research, quality improvement, and education
Evaluates the social, legal, regulatory, and ethical impact of informatics solutions on healthcare workflows and processes
Uses the following skills to engage end users, technical resources, and stakeholders: Assessment & consultation; Issues Identification; Outcomes Identification; Planning; Implementation; Evaluation; Innovation
- Bachelor’s Degree in health care field from an accredited program or informatics degree from an accredited institution
Three years clinical healthcare experience and/or 3 years informatics-related experience working in a health system directly with end users
Must have understanding of clinical care workflows, clinical operations, and a working knowledge of computer systems and systems life cycle
If RN, Minnesota state licensure required
Clinicians with other backgrounds (e.g., PharmD) are encouraged to maintain current certification or licensure as applicable
Industry-level certifications such as AACN, HIMSS, Lean, etc.
Additional Requirements (must be obtained or completed within a period of time) :
- Current Epic certifications in Inpatient and Ambulatory or commitment to obtaining them within 1 year
